LSMU rector's report approved
On 21st April, at the joint meeting of LSMU Council and Senate, the Rector of University Prof. Dr. Remigijus Žaliūnas presented LSMU Annual Report 2016. The presented report was welcomed by the University Senate and approved by the University Council.
In his presentation Prof. Dr. habil. Remigijus Žaliūnas spoke about studies and research, the administration and budget of the University, its staffing structure, developments in infrastructure, revenues and expenses, the activities of performing arts groups and Student Council, external evaluation and recognition of the University.
Prof. Dr. Remigijus Žaliūnas highlighted the success of the University in 2016. LSMU is one of the strongest and most powerful establishments of higher education in Lithuania, implementing 118 study programmes. The number of LSMU students has been growing steadily; in 2016 it reached 7900. LSMU is the only university in Lithuania with the number of international students accounting for 11.6 per cent and still growing. 1487 students graduated from the University (96.4 per cent of whom are citizens of Lithuania and 3.6 per cent are citizens of foreign countries). The community of the University includes 26 thousand people.
Considering the needs of the labour market, the University reevaluates the existing study programmes and develops new ones. In 2016, LSMU launched two new second cycle degree programmes: Lifestyle Medicine and (joint with Kaunas University of Technology) Medicinal Chemistry.
As of 31st December 2016, LSMU has 1027 residency students (in programmes of Medicine, Odontology and Veterinary Medicine). 50 researchers in the field of biomedical sciences and 5 researchers in the field of agriculture were awarded for their outstanding scientific work and publicizing the research results of LSMU (2013 – 2015) in prestigious international magazines with high h-index.
Projects financed by EU funds are developed and carried out. Also, the scientists of LSMU take an active part in projects financed by Research Council of Lithuania.
According to the data provided by the Information System for the Career Management (KVIS) on the employment of 2015 alumni within 6 months after graduation (1st January 2016 ), LSMU, with its graduates’ employment rate of 81.6 per cent, tops the list of 25 establishments of higher education in Lithuania.
In 2016, Prof. Dr. Feliksas Bukauskas was rewarded by Global Lithuanian Awards for bringing scientific innovations to Lithuania. For distinguished scientific contributions, Prof. Dr. habil. Daiva Rastenytė, the chancellor of Medical Academy and the head of Clinic of Neurology, received the Cross of Officer of the Order for Merits to Lithuania. Prof. Dr. habil. Limas Kupčinskas was awarded Kaunas City Science Award of 2016 in the Physical, Biomedical, Agricultural and Technology science fields.
Doctoral student of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Alina Kuzminienė (supervisor: prof V. Ulozas) was awarded as well, and the award for practical application of a scientific method went to a young scientist, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Juozas Kupčinskas.
