Visit of the Swedish Partners of the Project 'Healthy Ageing' to LSMU
On 7 October, Prof. Torbjörn von Schantz, Rector of Lund University (Sweden), and his wife visited the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences.
The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss the project ‘Healthy Ageing’ that has been under implementation by the scientists of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU), Vilnius University (VU), Lund University and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland since the beginning of 2015. The project is coordinated by Kaunas University of Technology (KTU).
The Science & Technology Centre of Excellence for Healthy Ageing that is to be established in Kaunas will aim at creating innovative diagnostic and rehabilitation technologies, which allow early diagnosis of diseases of the mature society.
During their visit the guests visited LSMU Veterinary Academy, where Prof. Henrikas Žilinskas, VA chancellor; Prof. Vaiva Lesauskaitė, Vice Rector for Research; and other VA representatives were pleased to show their scientific laboratories and invited the guests to participate briefly in various practical sessions of the students.
Later the Swedish representatives were invited to visit one of the newest and most modern units of LSMU – Centre of Modern Pharmaceutical and Health Technologies, where Prof. Vitalis Briedis, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, and other representatives of the dean’s office shared their experience in the establishment of the centre of pharmaceutical and health technologies in one place.
During this official visit to LSMU, Rector Prof. Remigijus Žaliūnas stressed that Lund University is an especially important partner in the project ‘Healthy Ageing’. According to the Rector, it is strategically important for Lithuania, where one third of the population will be elderly by 2030 (EUROSTAT data), to create the innovative diagnostic methods, which would prolong the duration of healthy ageing, i.e. disease- and disability-free life expectance, and to apply them to clinical practice.
Later the Rector of Lund University and his wife were invited to visit the KTU Centre of Science and Technologies ‘Santakos slėnis’ and the VU Scholarly Communication and Information Centre.
