Institute of Oncology

The Institute of Oncology was founded on 1 July 2011 according to the resolution of the Senate of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences of 15 April 2011. The Institute of Oncology of the Faculty of Medicine is a research structural division having no status of a legal entity. The Institute is engaged in scientific research strategically important for the University, in the experimental development work, study programmes, training of scientists and oncology specialists as well as in clinical practice in medical oncology, radiation oncology and haematology.

The Institute of Oncology consists of the Clinic of Oncology and Haematology and the Oncology Research Laboratory.

Operational objectives of the Institute of Oncology:

• To carry out scientific research and experimental development activities related to oncology and haematology, to participate in the research programmes of the University, Lithuania and on the international level;
• To optimise the studies of oncology and haematology subjects by improving traditional methods and introducing new teaching techniques;
• To participate in the provision of health care services.

• To organise and conduct studies and research;
• To develop study plans and programmes, curricula of subjects and specialisation plans;
• To collect equipment and devices necessary for research and studies;
• To publish textbooks, scientific articles, training books and other teaching, learning and scientific measures;
• To discuss and propose candidates for teaching positions, the head of the Institute, scientific fellows and the manager of the research laboratory of the Institute;
• To participate in the provision of high quality health care services and introduction of new diagnostic and treatment methods.

The main principle is the unity of education, research and clinical practice.

The structural divisions of the Institute include the Oncology Research Laboratory and the Clinic of Oncology and Haematology.

Oncology Research Laboratory

The Oncology Research Laboratory was founded in 2009. The Institute of Oncology including the laboratory was finally established following the resolution of the Senate of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences held in March 2011. A team of biologists and geneticists was formed and the laboratory began to work in autumn of 2011. Prognostic and predictive factors of breast and colorectal cancers are currently under investigation.

Research areas:

• Prognostic and predictive molecular markers of solid tumors. Genetic factors are known to play a role in cancerogenesis. The aim is to investigate different gene mutations and to assess their predictive and prognostic value.
• Radiobiology research.  The response to ionizing radiation and its biological mechanism is going to be analysed.
• Molecular markers of myeloproliferative and lymphoproliferative diseases. The aim is to search for new markers that would help to diagnose oncohaematological diseases and predict their progression and relapse.
