The Department of Rehabilitation was established at the Faculty of Medicine in Kaunas Medical Academy in 1991, and since 1992 has been in the structure of the Faculty of Nursing. The Department of Rehabilitation has actively participated in the preparation, registration and execution of the first cycle study programmes Occupational Therapy (2001) and Physical Therapy (2002), the second cycle study programmes Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (2010), Health Rehabilitation through Physical Exercise (2011) and Art Therapy (2013).

The Mission of the Department of Rehabilitation is to prepare highly qualified specialists in rehabilitation and form their attitudes and values, be leaders in preparation of highly skilled occupational therapists and physical therapists for the health care sector and participate in the creation of health policy strategies. 

Studies

The Department of Rehabilitation is responsible for execution of the following study programmes:

Study programme Occupational Therapy is for the graduates from the secondary school. The principal aim of the study programme is to educate and train highly qualified specialists of occupational therapy, who are capable of keeping abreast of the newest scientific knowledge and its critical analysis in order to apply treatment and prevention in all health care and educational institutions. The study programme consists of 240 ECTS credits (6400 hours). The qualification degree granted is Bachelor of Rehabilitation, and the professional qualification of Occupational Therapist is given.

Study programme Physical Therapy. The principal aim of the study Program is to educate and train highly qualified specialists of physical therapy, who are capable of keeping abreast of the newest scientific knowledge and its critical analysis in order to apply treatment and prevention in all health care, educational institutions Length of the study in this programme is 4 years. Programme consists of 240 ECTS credits (6400 hours). Qualification degree is Bachelour of Rehabilitation, and professional qualification Physical Therapist is given after completion of the study program.

Study programme Health promotion and rehabilitation.  The aim of the study program is to deepen student’s knowledge about the modern health promotion and   rehabilitation  science   issues,   diagnosis, prevention and rehabilitation  strategies. To develop  students  ability  to  independently  carry out scientific research, analyze and interpret their results,  apply  the  results  in  practice.  Improve students  practical  skills  to  solve  the  problems  in unexpected    new    practical    situations,    adopt innovative, research - based solutions. Length of the study in this programme is 1,5 years. Programme consists of  900 ECTS credits. ). Qualification degree is Master‘s degree in rehabilitation.

Study programme Art Therapy is a joint programme between the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences and Vilnius Art Academy, The Faculty of Kaunas. There are two forms of studies programmes: a 2-year full-time programme or a 3-year continuing studies programme, both covering 120 ECTS credits. At the end of the studies all students will have to defend the final Master’s thesis. Qualification degree is Master of Medicine and Health Care. Art therapeutists will be able to provide services for children or adolescents with special needs, adults and elderly people in rehabilitation institutions and sanatoriums, mental health centres, other health care or social service institutions or crisis centres.

Residency study programme Physical medicine and rehabilitation. The programme has a 3 year residency course. Every year, 6-7 young doctors complete their physical and rehabilitation residency.

Teachers of the Department of Rehabilitation participate in many others study programmes: Medicine, Odontology, Public Health, Social Work in Medicine, Nursing, Animal Sciences, Management of Animal Recourses,     doctoral study programme Nursing. Department of Rehabilitation organizes 10 postgraduate study programs.

There are 4 student scientific groups: rehabilitation (assoc. prof. Lina Varžaitytė), occupational therapy (assoc. prof.  Jolita Rapolienė), physicsl therapy (assoc. prof. Gražina Krutulytė), sport medicine (Povilas Valentukonis).

Research

Currently the department is participating in scientific research "Evaluation of Biopsychosocial Disorders of Patients and Their Correction in Rehabilitation".  Scientific work is carried out by 5 doctoral students and clinic staff.

The Department of Rehabilitation participates in the following projects:

• Automatic algorithms for atrial fibrillation risk prediction after acute myocardial infarction (Nr. MIP-15391, duration: 2015-2017)
• Research work "High-Power Laser Impact Assessment in Clinically Deferred Chronic Constipation of Plantar Pancreas, Achilles Tendon" (duration: 2015-2019).

The department cooperates with Bergen University College (Norway), Olsztyn University (Poland), Wisconsin-Madison University (USA), PXL University College (Belgium), Ulmo University (Germany). Contract with Jana Kochanowski at Kielcach University (Poland).

Intercourse are developed with Kazakhstan: teachers of the department go to conduct lectures about rehabilitation for specialists of health care.

The Clinic of Geriatrics was established in 1995 and belongs to the Faculty of Nursing. The main activities of the Clinic include undergraduate and postgraduate education on gerontology and geriatrics of medical students, nursing students (undergraduate and postgraduate), master’s degree students in physical therapy and rehabilitation (occupational therapists and physical therapists), and clinicians as part of continuing medical education (courses on gerontology and geriatrics for family doctors and internists as well as geriatricians), research focused on health and social care provision and nursing of the elderly aiming at their quality of life, and clinical practice in Kaunas Clinical Hospital where the clinic is affiliated. In the hospital, doctors of the Clinic of Geriatrics give consultations in the Memory Problems Office and in every department where geriatrician’s consultation is needed.

During the last ten years, the Clinic of Geriatric was a partner in international research projects: Enabling Technologies for Persons with Dementia (ENABLE, EC 5^th FP), Increasing the Participation of Elderly in Clinical Trials (PREDICT, EC 7^th FP), Functional State Evaluation System with Distributed Intellect for Elderly and Disabled persons (EDFAS), A Guardian Angel for the Extended Home Environment (GUARANTEE), and Kaunas Healthy Ageing Study. The Clinic also collaborates with Nordic Network in Dementia Diagnostics and InterRAI network.

The staff of the Clinic of Geriatrics is actively involved in development activities of creating the geriatric care system in Lithuania and have been included into the working groups of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Social Care when preparing the medical norm MN 71 'Doctor geriatrician: rights, duties, competencies and responsibilities', special requirements for in-patient geriatric care delivery, programme of development of  geriatric care, etc. The members of the Clinic also participated in the workshop organised by Kaunas County Administration, planning the system for persons with dementia in the county.

The Clinic of Geriatrics constantly has doctoral students, and the results of their research are implememented into practice and are used to clarify the need of geriatric care in Lithuania.

Studies

The Clinic of Geriatrics is responsible for residency in geriatrics, preparing doctors geriatricians. This programme began in the year 2000. In the Clinic of Geriatrics, nurses seeking the bachelor’s and the master's degree,  occupational therapists and physical therapists seeking the master’s degree are trained. Here, medical students of the 6^th year have  a course on gerontology and geriatrics. Doctoral students - nurses and medical doctors - also study in the Clinic. Postgraduate courses on gerontology and geriatrics are available for family doctors, internists and geriatricians.

Research: The research is focused on the quality of life in the elderly with chronic diseases, dementia, and gerontological nursing problems. The Clinic has participated in a number of above mentioned international research projects.

PEDAGOGICAL ACTIVITY

Department of Sports Medicine teaches students of the Medical Academy and Veterinary Academy.
Graduate study programs:

• First cycle of studies (bachelor degree): Oral Hygiene, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Public Health, Food Sciences, Animal Husbandry Technology, Animal Science, Health Psychology, Veterinary Food Safety.
• Second cycle of studies (master degree): Health and Rehabilitation, Advanced Nursing Practice, Lifestyle Medicine, Nursing Leadership.
• Integrated studies: Medicine, Farmacy, Odontology, Veterinary Medicine.
• Third cycle of studies (PhD): Biology, Medicine, Nursing.
• Non-Degree Programs: Sports Medicine residency.

Lecturers supervise final theses of bachelor and master students, assist in the preparation of publications and abstracts for conferences. Also in Institute of Sport works SSS (Students’ Scientific Society) physiotherapy society (scientific supervisor dr. Agnė Slapšinskaitė).

Since 2000 Department of Sports Medicine lecturers have published 4 textbooks and 8 educational books for students.

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY

Currently the Department of Sports Medicine is participating in scientific research „Comprehensive physical health assessment from a multidisciplinary point of view“. 14 Department of Sports Medicine lecturers successfully have defended their doctoral thesis in period 2001-2016.

About department

Since 2014, Children’s Rehabilitation Clinic has been established. Children’s Rehabilitation Clinic, where health care services for children with developmental and biosocial functions disorders are provided; research, master studies and other educational activities are carried out.

Function

1. Organize of study, science research and health care work.
2. Prepare plans of specialities and specialization studies, programs of teaching plans.
3. To organize specialists improvement and re-qualification.
4. Efficiently usage of equipments intended for science, study and health care.
5. To prepare scientific articles, manuals, books for studying and other instrumentality for studies.
6. Consider and submit proposals for candidates in pedagogical, head of Clinics department and laboratory staff which counts into the composition of it and into the competitions place for chief, and confirm candidature.
7. Participate in Center of open access according to procedures established by university when the Center of open access is formed by the basis of Clinics department.

Scientific activities

1. Prevalence of cerebral palsy in Kaunas county, part II (investigating  children who was born in 1999-2008).
2.  Epidemiology of myelomeningocele and quality of life in Lithuania.
