About us

Institute of Microbiology and Virology is committed to teaching, training and inspiring students in the microbiological sciences. Our main goal is to prepare students for leadership roles as microbiologists in health-related fields, environmental health, industry, government agencies, university teaching, etc.

Our institute is hosting students from the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Veterinary, the Faculty of Pharmacy, the Faculty of Public Health, the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Nursing. All students gain a strong background in microbiology, virology and immunology; however, interdisciplinary programmes with strong ties to other departments and programmes are encouraged.

Institute of Microbiology and Virulogy has close collaboration with other International Study and Research Institutions (Copenhagen University (Denmark), Lund University (Sweden), University College of London (Great Britain), Ghent University (Belgium), etc. The International scientific seminars and conferences have been organised under the supervision of our Department as well.

Studies

Education at the Department of Microbiology is taken to include undergraduate and postgraduate education and doctoral (PhD) studies. The Department does provide educational services to medical doctors-microbiologists to improve their professional qualifications as well. 

There are students from the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Pharmacy, the Faculty of Public Health, the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Nursing studying at our Department and the following study programmes are well established: "Medicine“ for medical (second and third year) students, "Pharmacy" for pharmaceutical (second year) students and for pharmacoengeneering (first year) students, "Public Health" for public health (first year) students. "Nursing" for nursing (second year) students; "Odontology"  for students of the Faculty of Odontology (second year) and comprehensive programme "Oral hygiene"  for (third year) students have been offered at the Department of Microbiology as well.

Research

Research interests of the Department of Microbiology include acute and chronic bacterial suppurative infections, hospital-acquired infections, H. pylori and its role in the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal pathology and antimicrobial drug resistance.

There are 12 people employed at the Department of Microbiology: 3 professors, 4 associate professor, 1  lecturer, 3 assistant professors and 1 PhD student. Scientific and educational support staff consists of 3 technicians and 1 receptionist.
